To the children of the modern age and beyond

By Alan Baylis

There is no excuse for poverty in a modern city. If there is enough trade to support the existence of a city then there is enough money to be charitable. I ask anyone to deny that if a impoverished person sat outside any major transport terminal and every person who passed by gave him a coin that he would be buried in coins by the end of the day. A life saved for a coin.

If you have the means to start a business then make it a non-profit organization that provides a service to the people. This service should be provided by the government through the tax system but since capitalism the governments are being manipulated to privatize and spend the budget providing amenities for businesses. Therefore this void of responsibility should be picked up by the fortunate and good spirited people within the society. If the product that the organization produces is well directed such as a bowl of soup then the cost to the people may be just a coin after costs are balanced. This type of service alleviates the necessity to have a stove, pot, bowl, spoon and can-opener. Not easy for the homeless.

With communication technology as it is we can no longer say that we do not know of the plight of other countries. Is it fair that a child in one part of the world is born into a house, food, clothing, education, etc., while a child born elsewhere in the world is born on the dirt? Is it fair that people then say that the child born on the dirt is mentally inferior or not pulling his weight? If your intention is honorable use one of the international charity organizations to donate or sponsor a child. Even if the honesty of the organization is unknown, at least you have allowed the potential for good to happen, and the blessing is yours either way. The fate of a county, as with people, can change suddenly. If we do not support other countries while we are in a position to, then we cannot rightly expect any assistance should economic or natural trouble befall us.

With charity the point to remember is that there is not enough wealth, materials or even the space for everyone to have their own exclusive Taj Mahal. When you find that all your primary needs are fulfilled, turn around and support those in need. Even if you perceive that their troubles are self-imposed, you'll find that their self-destructive nature is caused by other needs.

For further information on charity, read the Bible.
